"I actually love this!"
Piara, Manchester
Our first Manchester group walked in as strangers and left having swapped numbers and set up a WhatsApp group of their own.
What it is
You know the feeling. You'd like to meet new people, but another loud bar with strangers shouting over music isn't it.
So we've made the opposite. A Saturday evening in someone's home with a small group we've matched to you, welcomed in by a host who runs the night around one simple theme. There's just enough structure that the conversation takes care of itself. It starts light and easy, and gets a little more real as the evening goes on, only ever as far as you want to take it.
No awkward mingling. No performance. Nothing to prepare or read beforehand. You turn up, there are soft drinks and snacks waiting, and the evening does the rest.
How it works
Choose your city, date and format, and book your spot. A couple of taps and you're in.
Straight after you book, a couple of quick questions so we can match you with the right group of 4-8 and sort things like allergies. Then we add you to the group chat to say hello before the night.
Once you're matched, we send the host's address through the PLY app on the day. Doors open at 7, and the evening ends at 9.
The formats
Each night runs on one of three formats, picked by your host. Here's the gist of each.
A handful of dilemmas, opened one at a time. "Would you take your dream job if it meant leaving everyone you love?" "A close friend asks if you like their new partner. You don't. What do you actually say?" No right answers and no winners, just the conversations you don't usually get with people you've only just met.
The evening hangs around our own stories, drawn out by some of life's bigger questions. Like: "tell us about a moment that changed how you see the world." No prep, just honest answers and a few surprises.
A music-led evening. You build a shared playlist together and swap the stories behind the tracks. At one point everyone adds a song that means something to them, and the room guesses whose it is. An easy way to share a bit of yourself.
The practical bits
Hosting
Evenings-In only works because of brilliant hosts, and we're looking for more across London, Manchester and Newcastle right now. You bring the sofa, the soft drinks and snacks, and a warm welcome. We bring the format, the guide, the guests and the group chat, so there's nothing to plan. It takes about two hours of your Saturday evening, and yes, hosts are paid for every night they run.
No experience needed. If your place is comfy and you're the sort who puts people at ease, you'd be a natural. It's one of the loveliest ways to meet your own neighbours too.
